History of Pune City
Archeological evidence indicates that the Rashtrkootas ruled Punya Vishaya (as Pune was known then) about 758-768 A.D. Later, the Yadav's ruled the region and Pune was called as Punaka Desh / Punaka Wadi t\during that time. The transition from Punya Vishaya to Pune took about 1000 years.
Pune gained in prominence as the stronghold of the Maratha warrior King Shivaji in the 17 th century. Later, the Peshwas made Pune their bastion and created a formidable kingdom that reached all the way.
